Steve Faulconbridge, Aug 2024, on our Men's Rewilding Trail.
Pafuri or the Makuleke Contractual Park has long been regarded as the jewel of the KNP- and this is where we will walk freely amongst our wild relatives. The area is bordered by the Limpopo River (Zimbabwe) to the north and the Luvuvhu River to the south, covering an area of approximately 24 000 ha in size.
Pafuri is considered the most biodiverse region in the KNP, with a staggering 80% or more of KNP's species in 1% of the land mass.
Owned by the Makuleke people and under custodianship by SANPARKS, Pafuri hosts not only abundant animal life and plant life but diverse habitats, captivating landscapes, expansive vistas and a rich cultural history.
Pafuri is not accessible to the general public, and vehicle access is limited to a very small road network, access is best done on foot! This is one of the few true wilderness areas remaining in Southern Africa.
Pafuri is a magical wilderness area filled with many wonders and delights. The Limpopo river floodplain hosts kilometers of world renowned wetlands, and is classified as a wetland of global importance for breeding birds (RAMSAR). The ever flowing Luvuvhu river, in contrast cuts through staggering sand stone cliffs and provides an abundance of water for the vast herds of elephant, buffalo and general game that call this area home.
Unique and diverse habitats abound, having been created and held between the conjunction of these two rivers. The Hutwini mountains are a prominent feature of the reserve, running east to west, holding the flow of the Luvuhu River, offering breathtaking views of the landscape.
Walk ancient elemental pathway - identify tracks and follow big game on foot.
Be guided in nature- inspired initiatory experiences into Air, Water, Earth, Fire & Spirit!
Our free and deep conversation around the fire in the evening is a sacred time in Men's circle, where we share about our families and our stories, hearing each man in turn, developing a deep and lasting bond between this band of brothers in the wild.
Every night we each hold a silent one hour fire-watch vigil, staying awake and keeping an eye out for wandering hippos and whooping hyenas. This is the real deal out here- this is Africa!
This experience is for the reasonably fit! Some trails are easier than others- the trail can be over challenging terrain, carrying all you need in a backpack. You should train to be fit enough so you fully enjoy this primitive hiking trail!
Ages 18 to 80. Only 7 pax plus your three guides- you can even get your own group together!
If you're intending to join us - please take note of the following with regard to our men's trails (these are our basic agreements):
1. 100% confidentiality - what happens on trail stays on trail - some topics discussed will be of a personal or sensitive nature.
2. No judgement - we will listen fully, and we do not speak over or interrupt each other - we reserve judgment and offer feedback only if the person is willing to receive it.
3. Open to other opinions and spiritual beliefs - this trail might bring about ideas and concepts that you have not been witnessed to before, rather than judge we recommend having an open mind and being open to shifting spiritual ideas.
4. Full transparency - we communicate openly and honestly - always speaking our truth from the heart - full disclosure - allows brothers to get to the root of their challenges.
5. Healthy challenge - we invite a healthy amount of supportive and direct challenge at times between members - calling each other out for blind spots - always in a supportive and loving way.
6. Open to feedback even when it hurts - great personal growth comes from feedback (that may sting a little). All are invited to create spaces to directly share with one another without fear that someone will take the feedback and get defensive or upset.
7. Committed to growth - all are fully committed to taking action to advance your well-being, lives and relationships.
"Our hearts are open to give gratitude and recieve the blessings and wisdom of the Waters of Life. We will perform simple rituals of gratitude to each element."
We will be sleeping under the stars, around a very small fire, on sleeping mats with NO tents. Each person will share shifts and be responsible for keeping watch at night around the fire - an allocated hour of silent reflection per person each night.
This primitive-wilderness trail is one of full immersion into nature. We carry EVERYTHING that we need IN and OUT again. From food to sleeping gear, so the term "Carry like a mule, live like a king" is very relevant here. The more luxury that is required, the more effort will be needed to carry it. So lets see what "stuff" we can leave behind, or, carry more than is needed, there are always lessons to be learned here.
Everything required for the duration of the Trail must be carried in a backpack. Participants will have to cater for their breakfasts, lunches and dinners as well as the odd snack. Part of the trail is about sharing, so we encourage you to share what you have if you feel the desire to do so.
In order to minimize our impact, ALL COOKING must be done on a gas stove. Fires will always be small; we will do our best to leave no trace after each night's camping.
The need for a camping stove / cooker with gas will be useful. We recommend bringing a journal and a pen, to document any thoughts, realizations, epiphanies and may be needed for an activity. - there will be a communal kettle for the mornings and evenings hot water made on the fire.
A detailed equipment checklist and meal suggestions are found on our sign-up form.
"Carry like a mule, live like a king."
In other words, bring only absolute essentials. And some cake. OK maybe not the cake. I just love cake.
